Ex-President Donald Trump tried to launch allegations against the son of US President Biden during the election campaign. Now the Republican wants to attack Biden directly – and is demanding support from Putin.
Former US President Donald Trump has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to release information about alleged payments to the family of his successor, President Joe Biden.
In an interview with the staunchly conservative Real America’s Voice, Trump claimed that Biden and his son Hunter “both” received $3.5 million from the Moscow mayor’s wife. That is “a lot of money” and the question is what it was paid for.
“Well, I would assume that Putin knows the answer. I think he should publish it. I think we should know the answer, »said Trump in a TV interview published on Tuesday evening (local time). The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine was not a topic in the almost 30-second excerpt of the conversation.
Already in the election campaign mood
Republican Trump repeatedly used allegations against Hunter Biden during the 2020 election campaign in order to stir up feelings against his democratic challenger. So far, however, there has been no talk of payments to Joe Biden himself. Hunter Biden received consulting fees from abroad while his father was vice president under Barack Obama until 2016. Despite investigations and an ongoing tax investigation, Hunter Biden has not yet been charged with any illegal conduct.
The allegations regarding the alleged payment of $3.5 million originally came from an investigation by Republicans in the Senate. It said a company co-founded by Hunter Biden received the money in 2014 from Elena Baturina, wife of former Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. According to a fact check by CNN, Hunter Biden has denied the allegations. His lawyer was quoted as saying that he was neither a co-owner nor a co-founder of the company that received the fee.
In July 2019, Trump unsuccessfully urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a telephone call to announce investigations into Hunter Biden’s allegedly questionable dealings in the country. It was the beginning of the Ukraine affair that led to an impeachment trial against Trump, which he survived only thanks to a majority of his Senate Republicans.
