In Russia, men between the ages of 18 and 27 are required by law to do military service. The young soldiers could soon go to Ukraine, as documents from the Russian government show.
Conscription is strictly regulated in Russia: men between the ages of 18 and 27 must serve for their country, twice a year there are large rounds of conscription. The next big spring conscription starts on April 1st – and according to documents from the Russian government, the young soldiers could also face the war in Ukraine.
The usual training plan for recruits could be undermined by the state of war
The more than 100,000 new recruits are usually supposed to undergo one to two months of training before they complete another three to six months of extended training and are then put into service. According to the guidelines, recruits with less than four months of training experience should generally not be considered for the assignment. In a state of war, however, these laws could simply be ignored, as the “Institute for the Study of War” writes.

A document published by the Russian Ministry of Defense also points to this possibility. The document states that “in order to ensure combat readiness” for the Ukraine war, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation “planned the deployment to the theater of operations of conscripts who will be mobilized as part of the spring 2022 draft campaign.” Information on the number of recruits is also to be sent to the “Main Directorate for Mobilization and Logistics of the Russian Armed Forces” by April 11 this year.
Conscripts as soldiers in the Ukraine war? Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu disagrees
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently contradicted the statement that conscripts should be used in the Ukraine war. However, in the first weeks of the invasion of Ukraine, conscripts from last year were deployed. It is also possible that the conscripts do not serve at the front immediately, but first replace professional soldiers in the wider environment, who in turn are then transferred to the front.
April 1 will also be critical for the Russian armed forces for another reason: Because the old guard of conscripts is scheduled to retire from military service on this day, a number of soldiers will return to their homeland from Ukraine. As a result, significantly more people in the Russian population could also find out what the so-called “military special operation” really looks like: With a significantly higher number of victims than officially known and a Ukrainian population that is doggedly fighting against the “liberation”.
