Karl Lauterbach: “Please wear masks indoors voluntarily”

Most of the corona restrictions in Germany will be lifted this weekend. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach warns, however, that the pandemic is not over yet.

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach called for further caution before the end of numerous corona restrictions in Germany. “Individuals should not be irritated by the easing now: the pandemic is not over yet,” said the SPD politician on Friday of the German Press Agency.

“The risk of becoming infected now is higher than ever before.” His appeal is therefore: “Please wear masks indoors voluntarily.” These are particularly effective protection and should be used as much as possible.

Karl Lauterbach expects the wave to subside after Easter

According to the new nationwide legal framework, only a few general protective requirements, such as masks in clinics, nursing homes, buses and trains, as well as tests in schools, for example, will be possible in the federal states from this Sunday. They can impose further requirements, including the obligation to wear masks in shops or schools, in so-called hotspots if the state parliament determines that there is an impending critical corona situation in this region. Of the 16 states, only Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Hamburg are making use of this for the time being.

Lauterbach said: “It is disappointing that more federal states are not following this example. They are only extending the omicron wave and risk more unnecessary deaths before the wave is expected to subside after Easter.” Effective protection of citizens in this phase of the corona pandemic is possible and necessary. Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania show how it’s done.
