The pope could apparently travel to the capital of Russia-attacked Ukraine. Francis confirms that such considerations exist.
Pope Francis is considering a trip to Ukraine. On the flight to Malta, a journalist who was traveling with him asked him if he would consider an invitation to visit the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
“Yes, that’s on the table,” replied the 85-year-old. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko had already invited the Argentine to come to the war-torn country. Pope Francis condemned the war in Ukraine in numerous public appearances and sent representatives of the Catholic Church from the Vatican there.
The Pope arrived in the smallest EU country, Malta, on Saturday for his two-day trip. The plane with the Vatican delegation and journalists on board landed at Luqa International Airport around 10 a.m. in the morning. During the flight, Francis thanked the journalists who were traveling with him for accompanying him.
Meetings with Maltese politics and the local church as well as a catamaran trip to the island of Gozo await the head of the Catholic Church. One of the focal points of the Holy Father’s journey is the issue of migration. On Sunday, the Argentine wants to visit a center that houses around 50 migrants. Migration is considered a difficult issue in Malta.
