According to human rights activists, almost 180 people have been arrested in Russia during nationwide protests against the Russian military operation.
At least until the afternoon 178 arrests in 15 cities given, informs the non-governmental organization OVD-Info. A journalist from the AFP news agency in Moscow observed more than 20 people being taken away from a park near the Kremlin. Police arrested people sitting on park benches or just standing around without explaining the reasons for their arrest. A woman shouted “No to the war in Ukraine” several times when she was arrested.
Around 25 people are also said to have been arrested in St. Petersburg – although it is unclear how many of them actually wanted to protest.
Activists have for today in around 30 Russian cities to “sit-in strikes” against Russia’s military action in Ukraine. The organizers say the protests are directed against the “collapse of the Russian economy” and against Russian President Vladimir Putin. They are also demanding the release of the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. “Russia deserves peace, democracy and prosperity,” they say.
According to information from OVD-Info were in Russia since the protests began against the military operation in the neighboring country as a whole more than 15,000 people arrested.
