Russian propaganda is troubling the pro-Western government in Moldova. President Maia Sandu is therefore calling for “a common policy” among the European states.
The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has called for joint European action against Russian propaganda.
“We have an information war here. Disinformation was always a big issue, now it’s even worse,” said the pro-Western head of state of the former Soviet republic, which borders southern Ukraine, in an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
Although the parliament in Chisinau has drawn up a law against disinformation, “small countries like ours cannot do much against networks like Telegram”. Even Germany has not been successful so far. “We need a common policy against such sources of disinformation.”
In her first interview with foreign media since the start of the war in Ukraine, Sandu called for support to avert social unrest. She said that Moldova would need “several 100 million euros” this year alone.
According to its own account, Moldova has taken in more refugees per capita than any other neighboring country of Ukraine. An international conference is planned for Tuesday in Berlin, at which possibilities for support for Ukraine’s smallest neighboring country are to be explored.
