Bodies on the streets and mutual accusations: Ukraine counts over 400 dead civilians. Moscow speaks of staged images. Are the bodies real? A fact check.
The images from the Kiev suburb of Bucha with corpses on the streets caused international horror. But the Russian side is trying to sow doubts about the authenticity of the recordings on social networks.
Ukraine has counted over 400 civilian deaths in the area around the capital, blaming recently withdrawn Russian troops. Moscow denies this and speaks of a “fake”.
Claim: Alleged corpses in pictures are said to be living people.
Rating: Wrong.
Facts: The pictures from Butscha have been going around the world since the weekend. The Ministry of Defense in Moscow already reacted on Sunday and indicated on Telegram that the recordings could be fake. A video that is now widespread on social networks was published, which the Ministry of Defense describes as “confusing” in the text of the article. The reasons therefore: A corpse moves her arm in it. A corpse later straightened up, which is revealed by looking in the car’s rear-view mirror during the recording.
Does the corpse raise its hand?
The distributed video shows a drive down Jablunska Street in the Kiev suburb of Bucha, where many bodies can be seen. The scenario is better seen in a full version of the footage circulated by Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. It shows in higher resolution that the alleged hand is a drop of water. This drop moves upwards on the windshield due to the wind.
In other shots of Jablunska Street, the body is always in the same place. The changing weather shows that all the photos must have been taken at different times of the day.
Does a dead person rise again?
Later in the video, a corpse is said to stand up again. The Moscow Ministry of Defense writes that this can be seen in the rear-view mirror after the car has moved on. In social networks, users even claim that the corpse with the allegedly raised hand and the one who is getting up are identical. But it’s not the same dead man.
This becomes clear in the full, uncut video, as the rearview mirror view only comes 40 seconds after the supposed hand movement. The car drove about 100 meters further. In addition to different clothing, another video recorded by independent media also shows that the two bodies are in different positions.
A straightening cannot be seen in the better resolution video from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, even when the playback is slowed down. The impression is probably only created because most exterior mirrors have a curve to increase the field of vision. The corpse gets in the center of the rear-view mirror while driving.
