The United States has committed to the defense capability of China’s neighbor Taiwan. A new missile defense system is now to be delivered for this purpose.
The US State Department has approved a proposed $95 million sale of a Patriot missile defense system to Taiwan.
This will help Taiwan modernize its armed forces and strengthen its defenses, thereby contributing to the region’s political and military stability, the ministry said.
The order includes, among other things, planning, delivery and operation of the missile defense system. The system will be used as a “deterrent against regional threats and to strengthen national defence,” the ministry said. The US Congress had been informed, with which the order could be finalized, it said.
The communist leadership in China regards Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic and threatens to conquer it. The USA, in turn, has committed itself to the defense capability of the democratic island state of Taiwan – which has so far primarily meant arms deliveries. However, US President Joe Biden warned last year that the US had an “obligation” to defend Taiwan in the event of an attack. China outraged Biden’s statements.
