“Election error”: Laschet’s incorrectly folded ballot paper has no consequences

When CDU chancellor candidate Laschet threw his ballot paper into the ballot box last September, it was apparently not folded correctly. Now the Election Review Committee makes a recommendation.

Six months after the federal election, the responsible parliamentary committee made a judgment about the incorrectly folded ballot paper of the then chancellor candidate Armin Laschet (CDU): The fact that the paper ended up in the ballot box was a voting error.

However, the faux pas did not have any influence on the federal election. The Election Review Committee therefore recommends that the Bundestag reject corresponding objections from citizens.

allegation of manipulation

Laschet had put the ballot paper in the polling station in Aachen in such a way that the photographers on site could document who he had given his votes to – the CDU. Several citizens lodged complaints against the election. Tenor: Laschet manipulated.

The election examination committee has now dealt with the first batch of 2115 election objections: In addition to Laschet, the 238 procedures mainly revolved around the breakdowns in the election in the Berlin city area. The committee comes to the conclusion: All objections examined so far are inadmissible or unfounded.

In the Laschet case, it is explained on several pages why his mishap did not ruin the entire federal election. The local election officer should have given Laschet a new slip of paper. But she didn’t see what was happening through the hustle and bustle. Ultimately, Laschet’s single note had no influence on the election. It was no surprise that he voted for the CDU. “Even assuming voter manipulation, the process could have had either a positive or a negative effect,” the committee said.
