Covid study: Corona cases in England in March at a record level

Last month, one in 16 people in England was infected with the virus – a doubling of the infection rate from February. The trend is increasing, especially in the oldest age group over 55.

According to a recent study, corona infections in England rose to a record level in March.

Researchers at Imperial College London, who have been systematically analyzing the infection process every month since the beginning of the pandemic, came to the conclusion on the basis of PCR tests on a representative sample that one in 16 people in England was infected with the virus in March – this corresponds to the highest previously estimated value in the long-term study.

This infection rate more than doubled compared to February, according to the previous study, one in 35 people in England was infected at the time. The figures for March show that the trend is rising, especially in the oldest age group over 55. There, the proportion of infected people tripled compared to the previous month. The researchers explain this by the fact that the booster vaccinations in the elderly were a long time ago. Infection rates among children and younger adults have recently declined slightly or stagnated, although the rate was still highest among schoolchildren, with one in ten infected. Almost 95 percent of all positive cases in the study fell back to the omicron subvariant BA.2.

Studies like those by Imperial College have been giving the most realistic picture of the infection situation in England and Great Britain as a whole for some time. The infection figures published daily by the Ministry of Health contain a very high number of unreported cases, as test capacities have been reduced and positive cases are only reported voluntarily.
