Press conference: Karl Lauterbach explains statements about corona isolation

Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) has caused confusion with statements about the “voluntary isolation” of corona patients. Now he has explained himself in a press conference.

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) has acknowledged his personal responsibility for the back and forth in the new regulation of corona isolation. “It was a mistake for which I am personally responsible,” said Lauterbach on Wednesday in Berlin. The initially planned waiver of the isolation of corona infected people sent out “the wrong signal” – namely that isolation of infected people was no longer necessary. “That would be completely wrong and would play down the pandemic,” said Lauterbach.

The “basic idea” of the original decision was to relieve the health authorities by dispensing with isolation and quarantine orders, said the SPD politician. This relief should now be implemented by simply dispensing with quarantine orders – that is, contact persons of infected people would no longer be sent to quarantine by the authorities. Infected people should continue to receive an order from the office to self-isolate.

Lauterbach changes opinion on corona isolation

Lauterbach had announced on Monday that the mandatory isolation should be dropped on May 1st. This was coordinated with the health ministers of the federal states. The decision met with criticism and incomprehension from scientists, patient advocates and opposition politicians. Lauterbach backed away from the decision on Wednesday night.
