Ambassador Andriy Melnyk: “All Russians are enemies of Ukraine”

The Ukrainian ambassador Andriy Melnyk is not willing to “distinguish between bad Russians and good Russians,” he said in an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.

Andriy Melnyk, the Ukrainian ambassador in Germany, has been fighting for support for his country over the past few weeks – again and again with statements that not everyone understands. With statements in an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, the diplomat caused irritation again.

Among other things, Melnyk commented again on a benefit concert to which Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had invited him. The ambassador declined because Russian musicians were also supposed to perform there. “I’ll say it very clearly: Russia is an enemy state for us. And all Russians are enemies for Ukraine at the moment,” Melnyik justified his decision in the “FAZ” in view of the Russian war of aggression.

Andriy Melnyk: “It’s not Putin who murdered people in Bucha”

That could change, says the 46-year-old, who was born in Lviv: “But at the moment we don’t have time to ask: ‘Are you against Putin or for him – or maybe you only partially understand ?'” In view of the war in Ukraine, it cannot be a question of “distinguishing between bad Russians and good Russians”. Because: “It’s not Putin who murdered people in Bucha. They were specific people from different regions of Russia. They have their relatives, they call home, they plunder houses,” said Melnyk.

Melnyk apparently does not believe that relations between the two countries will improve in the future – even if Vladimir Putin were to be deposed. He has “no illusions” about the Russian opposition, said the ambassador in the interview: “Because we can’t expect anything good from Mr. Navalnyj, who unfortunately has to be in prison now. It doesn’t matter whether he’s at the top of power or in the opposition : Ukraine was, is and probably will remain an enemy of Russian society for a long time.”

Ambassador criticizes the Federal President

In an interview with the “Tagesspiegel”, Melnyk had also sharply criticized Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “For Steinmeier, the relationship with Russia was and remains something fundamental, even sacred, no matter what happens, even the aggressive war doesn’t play a major role,” he said. The invitation to the benefit concert was “a clear signal in the direction of Moscow,” “perhaps even to show Putin: I’m holding the fort here.” Melnyk accused Steinmeier of saying that sensitivity was “a foreign word for the Federal President, at least in relation to Ukraine”.
