Food crisis: Welthungerhilfe expects more refugees

As a result of famine, the pressure to migrate to Europe will increase – this is what Welthungerhilfe predicts. It is therefore important that the international community act quickly.

According to Welthungerhilfe, the food crisis as a result of the Ukraine war will lead to new refugee movements from poorer countries.

“We see very realistically in the countries where we work how dramatic the situation is. People will see no other option than to set off,” said the Secretary General of German World Hunger Aid, Mathias Mogge, of the Düsseldorf “Rheinische Post”.

The migration pressure to Europe will increase as a result of famine. The background is, among other things, the price jumps of up to 70 percent since the beginning of the war for grain, which has so far been largely imported from Ukraine and Russia. “That’s why the international community must act quickly now,” warned Mogge.

The United Nations currently put the financial requirements for humanitarian aid worldwide at 43 billion dollars (39 billion euros). “This is the highest need that has ever existed.” So far, however, only $3.6 billion has been pledged by the international community. “We need more direct help for individual countries and a haircut,” Mogge demanded.
