Capitol attack: US House to prosecute Trump’s ex-advisers

In processing the events of January 6, 2021, the US House of Representatives is targeting Trump’s former trade adviser and his former social media boss. There should be criminal proceedings.

A majority in the US House of Representatives has cleared the way for criminal action to be taken against two prominent advisers to then-President Donald Trump for contempt of Congress.

Now the Justice Department must decide whether to open criminal proceedings that could lead to indictment. Former trade adviser Peter Navarro and Trump’s former social media chief Dan Scavino have refused to work with the House committee investigating last year’s attack on the US Capitol, despite being subpoenaed.

In the House of Representatives, 220 MPs voted in favor of the resolution to charge Navarro and Scavino with contempt of Congress, and 202 voted against. The vote largely went along party lines, with just two Republicans joining US President Joe Biden’s Democrats, who control the House of Representatives.

Bannon and Meadows are also due to appear in court

Last week, the investigative committee had already voted to refer the matter to the chamber’s plenum to clear the way for investigations into the two ex-advisers. The plenary session of the House of Representatives had already cleared the way for criminal proceedings against Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon and his former chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Bannon was subsequently indicted on two counts of contempt of Congress in November and faces a trial. If convicted, he could face a minimum of 30 days and up to a year in prison per charge.

Almost two months after Trump’s election defeat, his supporters stormed the seat of Congress in Washington on January 6, 2021 after an inciting speech by the Republican. They wanted to prevent confirmation of Biden’s victory. The attack killed five people and injured dozens. The attack on the heart of US democracy shook the country. To this day, Trump claims without evidence that he was deprived of victory by electoral fraud. His camp has failed with dozens of lawsuits against the election results.
