After the flood disaster: the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate calls for Spiegel’s resignation

The NRW Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser has resigned from her post because of her misconduct. Now the CDU in Rhineland-Palatinate is asking Federal Family Minister Anne Spiegel to do the same.

Federal Family Minister Anne Spiegel (Greens) is coming under pressure again in the affair surrounding the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley.

After the North Rhine-Westphalian Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser (CDU) resigned because of misconduct, the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU chairman Christian Baldauf demanded the same from Spiegel. “Ms. Heinen-Esser’s resignation must be a role model for Anne Spiegel. Your resignation is long overdue, »said Baldauf to the «Handelsblatt».

Spiegel had already had to explain herself to an investigative committee in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament for her behavior as state environment minister last summer, when a flood destroyed large parts of the Ahr valley and claimed a number of lives. Heinen-Esser resigned yesterday after it became known that the CDU politician had met with other members of the government in Mallorca a few days after the disaster last July to celebrate her husband’s birthday.

After Heinen-Esser’s resignation, Finance Minister Lutz Lienenkämper also took over her departments. This was announced by Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU).
