Military expert Carlo Masala fears that Ukraine will plunge into chaos and violence for a long time. There is a danger that we will get a “Syria in Europe,” said Masala on Friday star-Podcast “Ukraine – the situation”. He expects attacks by Russian forces in the east of the country, which could lead to trench warfare. This, in turn, may cause interest in the conflict to dwindle. Because: “The more the Russian Federation is tied up in Ukraine, the weaker the army becomes, the less the risk that the Russian Federation will attack other states, and the less our interest in this conflict will become,” said the politics professor of the Bundeswehr University Munich.
War in Ukraine could last for months
Unlike two weeks ago, he now assumes that the war will continue for months, Masala explained. This opens up new opportunities for the West to support Ukraine. In this way, soldiers could be trained on Western weapons and the necessary logistics for these systems could also be set up.
Masala believes that Germany will ultimately participate in NATO’s additional commitment. He said: “The German position has always been characterized by the fact that you kept your foot on the brakes until everyone else stepped on the accelerator. Then you followed.”
