Chancellor Scholz has been in office for four months and has now traveled to London for his inaugural visit. Are Berlin and London getting closer again because of the Russian war in Ukraine?
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has arrived in the capital London for his inaugural visit to Great Britain.
The talks with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street, the seat of government, are likely to be determined by the Russian war against Ukraine. It was expected that, on the one hand, the issue of stricter sanctions against Russia and its President Vladimir Putin would be discussed. On the other hand, the increasingly urgent Ukrainian demands for the delivery of heavy weapons such as tanks are likely to play a role. Scholz wanted to return to Berlin in the evening.
The governments of both countries work together in the G7 group of leading Western industrialized countries and in NATO. It was unclear whether there would be much time left for a discussion of the consequences of Brexit in addition to the topic of Russia. Great Britain left the European Union (EU) in early 2021. In view of the war, German business representatives recently called for the trade agreement to be renegotiated.
For Scholz, Great Britain is the sixth inaugural visit to a country outside the European Union since he was sworn in a good four months ago. Previously he was in the USA, Ukraine, Russia, Israel and Turkey.
The joint public appearance by Scholz and Johnson later in the afternoon should be exciting. Both differ greatly in their political style. For Johnson, the “Partygate” affair about celebrations in the corona lockdown because of the war in Ukraine has publicly receded into the background. However, the police investigation in this connection has not yet been completed. Scholz, on the other hand, is known for a very sober appearance and working style.
