Ukraine war: Ukrainian soldiers probably filmed their own war crimes

After the Russian army allegedly committed war crimes in Bucha, there are now new allegations – albeit against Ukrainians. A video apparently shows Ukrainian soldiers shooting Russian prisoners of war.

The video shows an alleged war crime by Ukrainian soldiers, as reported by the and the unanimous. According to the US newspaper, the recordings have been circulating on the Internet since Monday. Both media have checked the video posted on Telegram for authenticity and independently conclude that it is genuine.

It shows four people in uniform lying on a street, one of whom has his hands tied behind his back. Three are wearing white armbands, which Russian soldiers in particular used as identification marks during the Ukraine war. They are lying in pools of blood, only one is still moving. “He’s still alive. Film these looters,” says a suspected Ukrainian soldier standing over the prisoners, according to the New York Times.

Alleged war crimes against Russians

“Look, he’s still alive. He’s panting,” he says, according to the newspaper, while an apparently wounded Russian soldier with his jacket pulled over his head is still breathing. A soldier then shoots him twice. After the man on the ground keeps moving, the soldier shoots him again, causing him to lie motionless. The video, apparently filmed with a cell phone, then shows a tracked vehicle marked with a white “V”, according to the “New York Times” a BMD-2 – an infantry fighting vehicle used by Russian airborne units. Some of the surviving men in the video wear Ukrainian insignia on their uniforms, blue armbands, or shout “Slava ukraini” repeatedly. Thus, Ukrainian soldiers are likely to be the perpetrators. However, it remains unclear to which unit they belong.

Both the BBC and the “New York Times” come to the conclusion that the video was taken near Dmytrivka, about eleven kilometers southwest of Bucha as the crow flies. The BBC points out that the video was filmed on the afternoon of March 29 or earlier. The US newspaper writes: “The killings appear to be the result of a Ukrainian ambush of a Russian column that occurred around March 30, when Russian troops were withdrawing from small towns west of Kyiv.” The incident cannot be dated more precisely.

Selenskyj has so far been silent on allegations

These are not the first allegations leveled against Ukrainian soldiers. In late March, Ukrainian soldiers are said to have shot Russian prisoners of war in the legs, according to the human rights organization, among others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced an investigation into the Kharkiv incident. He has not yet commented on the video of the shootings.

Above all, the shootings of Ukrainian civilians by Russian soldiers in Bucha have caused a worldwide sensation in recent days. Ukrainian officials now fear the number of victims in the small town of Borodjanka near Kyiv. 26 bodies alone were recovered from the rubble of two bombed-out residential buildings, Attorney General Iryna Venediktova wrote on Facebook on Thursday evening. It is currently difficult to estimate how many victims there were in total. Zelenskyj said Thursday that it was “much more terrible” in Borodyanka than in Bucha.
