After no-confidence vote: Pakistan could elect a new prime minister on Monday

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has lost the vote of no confidence. A successor could be chosen for him tomorrow. Will it be Shehbaz Sharif?

Parliament could elect a new prime minister on Monday following the vote of no confidence in Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The National Assembly is scheduled to meet on Monday (2 p.m. local time), the Parliament Secretariat said on Sunday. A new election is expected, for which opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif is the favourite. A majority of the 342 members of parliament have signaled their support.

On Saturday night, Pakistan’s parliament had withdrawn its confidence from Prime Minister Khan after hours of delay. The former cricket star is the first prime minister in Pakistan’s history to be ousted by a vote of no confidence. This was preceded by a political crisis in the South Asian nuclear power. The government spoke of a foreign conspiracy, but did not publish any evidence.
