“We control them all” – Donald Trump Jr. Text messages show delusions of grandeur and criminal contempt for voters

CNN has revealed explosive text messages from Donald Trump’s eldest son. According to this, Trump Jr. already planned to overturn the result of the vote two days after the election. Over the next few months, his strategy was implemented. Despite his unscrupulousness, he could not keep his father in office. In the end, the Capitol was stormed.

Two days after the 2020 presidential election, while the votes were still being tallied, Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., came up with a plan for his father to get a second term despite the unfavorable election result. CNN reveals this, citing a text message Donald Trump Jr. sent to the son of then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. The text is among documents obtained by the House Inquiry Committee on January 6, 2021.

Trump Jr. was certain that “we have operational control”. The result of the election should be overturned with the help of the Republican majorities in the US Senate and in swing states. The formation of the electoral college that ultimately chooses the president should be torpedoed at every level. “It’s very simple,” Trump Jr. wrote to Meadows on Nov. 5, later adding in the same message, “We have multiple avenues, we control them all.” Shortly before that text, Trump Jr. wrote: “We have to do this, please read it and please pass it on to everyone who needs to see it, because I’m not sure we do.”

planning a coup d’etat

In fact, back then, months before the storming of the Capitol, Trump Jr. appears to have devised the strategy that the former president’s supporters later implemented. Trump Jr. advised filing lawsuits and lobbying for recounts. This was to prevent crucial swing states from confirming their results. At the same time, Republican states should draw up candidate lists with false “Trump voters”. Trump Jr. even had a plan B. Should the challenges fail, Republicans in Congress should simply vote to reinstate Trump as president on January 6.

It is clear from the text messages that Trump Jr. was not at all convinced of the accuracy of the allegations of voter fraud. But that it was purely tactical considerations that led to the flood of lawsuits. The contempt for democratic processes is staggering. According to CNN, Trump Jr. unveiled a strategy to replace real voters with fake Republican voters in a handful of states. “The Republicans control Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, etc. We get the Trump voters,” Trump Jr. said. These fake voters did not appear in the official records in order to undermine the legitimacy of the official election lists. The idea was that this mess should empower parliaments to replace the electors who were elected by their own acceptable people.

unreal overconfidence

In addition to a complete misjudgment of the situation and legal options, Trump Jr.’s news clearly shows that the former president’s inner circle has been working systematically to overturn a democratic election. The uprising of January 6 does not represent a singular act, even in its disregard of the law, but as a further escalation level after all other attempts to delegitimize the election results had failed. In the weeks following the 2020 election, Trump and his supporters filed more than 60 unsuccessful lawsuits without finding evidence of alleged grand election fraud. They also requested various recounts based on these allegations of voter fraud.
