Ukraine War: Pro-Russian demonstrations in Hesse and Lower Saxony

Several hundred participants have gathered at pro-Russian rallies in Frankfurt and Hanover – there are also counter-demonstrations to show solidarity with Ukraine.

Pro-Russian rallies have begun in Frankfurt and Hanover under strict conditions. In Frankfurt, several hundred participants gathered on the Opernplatz at noon. Up to 2000 people were expected.

The demonstration was registered under the motto “Against hate speech and discrimination against Russian-speaking fellow citizens/Against war – For peace”. An originally registered motorcade with 700 vehicles was not allowed to take place after a decision by the city.

According to the police, more than 600 people with around 350 cars met in Hanover at noon to join a pro-Russian motorcade through the city. You could see Russian flags and German flags. The departure of the motorcade is currently being delayed because the bonnets should not be covered by flags that can be opened, said a police spokesman. That is one of the requirements. At the same time, around 850 counter-demonstrators gathered in the city center.

With a view to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the city of Frankfurt has also banned the wearing of certain symbols and badges – such as images with the letters V and Z and the “St. George ribbon”. These stand for Russian wartime activities in Ukraine. It was forbidden to condone Russian aggression and denigrate the state of Ukraine, its population and victims of the Russian invasion.

Several groups had also organized counter-demonstrations in Frankfurt. Posters read in English, among other things: “Stop Russia”, “No gas from Russia” and “Stop the genocide”. An alliance of democratic parties and Russian civil society organizations called for the action “We will not leave Frankfurt to the warmongers” to show solidarity with Ukraine and to advocate an end to the Russian war of aggression.
