According to prosecutor Iryna Venediktova, more than 1,200 bodies have been recovered in the region around the capital Kyiv in Ukraine. The prosecutor accuses Russia of serious war crimes.
According to Ukrainian sources, more than 1,200 people have been found dead in the region around Kyiv. In an interview with the British broadcaster Sky News on Sunday, prosecutor Iryna Venediktova called the number of 1,222 dead “in the Kyiv region alone”. She again accused the Russian troops of serious war crimes.
The Russian army withdrew from the region around the Ukrainian capital Kyiv about a week ago and is currently repositioning itself in eastern Ukraine. Dramatic conditions prevailed in the towns near Kyiv after the withdrawal of the Russian troops.
Ukraine: Hundreds dead in Bucha, Irpin and Borodyanka
Initial reports last weekend that hundreds of civilians may have been killed in the Kiev suburb of Bucha caused international outrage. Over the course of the week, similar reports from other places such as Irpin or Borodjanka accumulated.
Moscow denies any responsibility for the killings and speaks of fake photos and videos. However, material such as satellite images and recordings of intercepted radio communications suggest that Russian soldiers are responsible.
In the interview with the British broadcaster, prosecutor Venediktova also announced investigations into 5,600 alleged war crimes against 500 suspects from the ranks of the Russian military and the government in Moscow, including the head of the Kremlin. “Vladimir Putin is the main war criminal of the 21st century,” said Venediktova.
She also referred to the rocket attack on the Kramatorsk train station in eastern Ukraine on Friday, which Ukrainian sources said killed 52 people. There is evidence that Russia was behind the attack, the prosecutor said. Here, too, Moscow had denied responsibility and blamed the Ukrainian army.
