Diplomacy: Austria’s chancellor will meet Putin in Moscow on Monday

Karl Nehammer just met the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in Kyiv. Austria’s head of government is now traveling to Moscow to see Vladimir Putin.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday. Austria’s government spokesman Daniel Kosak confirmed this to the German Press Agency.

Chancellor Nehammer will fly to Moscow via Turkey. A meeting with Putin is planned there for Monday afternoon. The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported on it. In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the meeting. Nehammer is the first Western head of government to visit Putin in Moscow since the beginning of the war.

Kosak said the Austrian head of government’s trip had three goals: The war had to stop. That sounds banal, but it is the most important thing. The Ukrainian government is also expecting a “big battle” in the east of the country in the coming days. For this purpose, agreements for humanitarian corridors would have to be made. Thirdly, Nehammer wants to speak to Putin about the war crimes committed by the Russian army in Ukraine. These would have to be clarified by an independent international body.

It was said from those close to the Austrian Chancellor that he was acting in concert with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In doing so, Austria contradicted other statements about irritation in Ukraine.

«We were in Bucha. We saw the war crimes and Chancellor Nehammer will name them to President Putin,” the chancellery in Vienna said. One is “but not illusory”, it is about humanitarian goals. “It’s important to keep the conversation going.” It is highly unlikely “to return with peace.” For example, the Russian side does not allow any humanitarian aid in the combat zones, for example from the Red Cross.
