Family Minister Anne Spiegel under criticism: This is how the German press comments

Family Minister Anne Spiegel went on vacation for four weeks after the flood disaster. There was no other way, “because my husband couldn’t take it anymore,” the 41-year-old justified herself in a memorable appearance in front of journalists. The press coverage is devastating.

Visibly struck, Family Minister Anne Spiegel appeared before the press on Sunday evening to explain her vacation after the flood disaster last summer. She justified her decision at the time as Minister for Family and Environment in Rhineland-Palatinate, among other things, with the state of health of her husband, who suffered a stroke in March 2019.

As a further justification, the 41-year-old stated that Corona had been “an insane challenge” for her family. The pandemic “clearly left its mark” on her four children of daycare and primary school age.

The commentators were unimpressed by Spiegel’s attempts at justification. The press reviews:

“”: “With Anne Spiegel, the order seems to be clear: I first – then everything else. That is not appropriate for a minister, whether state or federal, even if she is now apologizing […] Only those who do not put themselves above the matter can stay in office.”

“”: “But Anne Spiegel has disappointed all expectations: those of the Federal Chancellor, who trusted her. Those of the Greens leadership, to whom she owes her office because they nominated the woman. And the population, who now have to listen to all sorts of private matters that they, sorry: didn’t order. Anne Spiegel takes care of one thing above all: Anne Spiegel. She is what you call an I-AG.”

“”: “In fact, we think that Anne Spiegel is exactly the right person for her ministerial post because of the 134 deaths that were not warned and despite her stubborn help for Ukrainian children. She simply fits into the picture. She’s really good at gender, and sitting out crises too.”

Anne Spiegel (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) in a statement convened at short notice

“Humanly, Anne Spiegel deserves compassion, warmth, understanding”

“”: “But for an Environment Minister it is a duty to react to the effects of climate change – on site and with all the means at her disposal. And it is certainly not appropriate to blame one’s own misconduct on subordinates […] Spiegel should vacate her place – for Katrin Göring-Eckardt, who would certainly be the better family minister.”

“”: “Humanly, Anne Spiegel deserves sympathy, warmth, understanding. As a politician, she is hopelessly overwhelmed. Anne Spiegel bore and bears the greatest responsibility. Not only for her family. But also for the country. And for the people whose loved ones died in the Ahr Valley, who have lost everything. It’s not enough to be ‘available’ during the four-week vacation.”

“”: “There have been some tearful resignations in Berlin in recent years, but not yet such a self-disclosure. With this unsuccessful attempt at self-assertion, Spiegel has probably achieved the opposite of what she intended. Whether there is another way out for her than resignation, it will show.”

“”: “And so, in addition to the inability of the state governments in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate to deal with the flood of the century, there is also a lack of empathy with the victims. It can’t get any worse. That’s how politics gambles away credibility.”
