After her public appearance and her apology, Minister for Family Affairs Anne Spiegel made her position available. She wanted to avert damage from the office.
Federal Family Minister Anne Spiegel (Greens) will resign in summer 2021 after criticism of her handling of the flood disaster in Rhineland-Palatinate. She announced this on Monday in Berlin.
“I’m doing this to avert damage from the office, which is facing major political challenges,” said Spiegel.
On Monday it was initially unclear whether the minister would remain in office. Spiegel (Greens) was under pressure because of her vacation in France after the flood disaster. At that time she was still Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of the Environment. During an emotional appearance, she described the holiday on Sunday evening as a mistake and apologized for it. She also admitted that, contrary to what was originally announced, she had not switched to the cabinet meetings from the holidays.
Spiegel had one of her two state secretaries represent her during her vacation. In this period between July 23 and August 29, the Ministry of the Environment was also present at the cabinet meetings, said Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) on Monday in Altenahr.
