Resignation: Anne Spiegel makes the position of family minister available

Well, then: Federal Family Minister Anne Spiegel (Greens) is making her office available. That’s what she says about her resignation.

Federal Family Minister Anne Spiegel resigns after only 125 days in office. The Greens politician said this in a personal statement on Monday.

She “decided due to political pressure to make the office of Federal Family Minister available,” it said, “I’m doing this to avert damage to the office, which is facing major political challenges.”

Massive criticism of Anne Spiegel

Spiegel came under massive public criticism after press research revealed that she, as Rhineland-Palatinate Environment Minister, had left for a four-week vacation in France after the devastating flood disaster on the Ahr last July.

On Sunday evening, the 41-year-old publicly apologized and justified her behavior at the time with her husband’s state of health and the burden on her four children from the coronavirus pandemic. However, she has fulfilled her obligations as a minister.

Anne Spiegel (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) in a statement convened at short notice

After the allegations became known, calls for Spiegel to resign were heard, especially from the Union. After Sunday’s statement, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had a government spokeswoman say that he was working “closely and trustingly” with the family minister. After her resignation, the chancellor expressed her “greatest respect” and wished her “all the best for the future after this difficult time.”

It is not yet clear who will succeed her in the office of Federal Minister for Family Affairs. Green party leader Omid Nouripour promptly announced a proposal.

Spiegel was sworn in as Federal Minister for Family Affairs on December 8, 2021. Previously, she had headed the family department in Rhineland-Palatinate since 2016 and also the environment department from January 2021. In May 2021 she gave up the family resort in Mainz.
