It is the Bundeswehr’s first military evacuation flight since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression: Specialists bring seriously injured Ukrainian children and adults to Germany.
The Luftwaffe flew war-wounded Ukrainians to Germany for treatment in a special aircraft.
The Bundeswehr soldiers picked up the patients on Monday with the Airbus A310 MedEvac, which is equipped for medical evacuation flights, in Rzeszow in south-eastern Poland, according to the Air Force and the medical service. The list of patients included twelve civilians, including injured children. Some patients were accompanied by relatives. The machine started in the early afternoon.
Ukraine had sent a request for help to the European Union, which went from there to Germany and the Bundeswehr. For the Bundeswehr it was the first flight with patients from Ukraine since the start of the Russian war of aggression a good six weeks ago.
The special aircraft took off from Cologne-Wahn in the morning. This machine was actually supposed to be shut down, the operation had been extended during the war in the Ukraine.
The flying intensive care unit of the Bundeswehr
The A310 MedEvac is the Air Force’s flying intensive care unit. The injured are treated further in the air by medical personnel. In the past, however, wounded Ukrainian soldiers had already been brought to Germany. There were also civilian aid transports. The city of Rzeszow is around 90 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and is an important hub for support to Ukraine.
According to the Bundeswehr, the aircraft can transport 44 patients lying down. The maximum of 25 medical staff can provide intensive medical care for up to six patients. One of the largest missions of the flying intensive care unit was the return transport of injured Germans after the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia in 2004.
