Family Minister: Survey: Large majority finds Spiegel’s resignation correct

After criticism of her family vacation shortly after the flood disaster in the summer of 2021, Anne Spiegel resigned from her position as Minister for Family Affairs. A large majority thinks this is the right step.

According to a survey, almost three-quarters of Germans believe that Green Party politician Anne Spiegel’s resignation as Federal Minister for Family Affairs is the right thing to do.

This view was expressed by 73 percent of those questioned in the survey conducted by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of the “Augsburger Allgemeine”. 17 percent think the resignation is wrong, 10 percent said they were undecided.

In the survey, a clear majority of 67 percent said that family and career cannot be reconciled in top politics. 22 percent of those surveyed are of the opposite opinion and believe in a good compatibility. 11 percent said they were undecided.

Spiegel announced on Monday that she was resigning from her position after it became known that she had gone on a four-week family vacation after the flood disaster in the summer of 2021. At that time she was environment minister in Rhineland-Palatinate. During an emotional appearance, Spiegel described the holiday on Sunday evening as a mistake and apologized for it. She justified her decision at the time, among other things, with the health of her husband, who suffered a stroke in 2019. Spiegel also cited the stress on her four children in the corona pandemic. Her family needed the vacation.
