In the federal government, Robert Habeck and Annalena Baerbock in particular are currently attracting attention with clear statements on the Ukraine war. Old videos show that it’s not a trend for either of them, but rather a clear stance for a long time.
In 2016, there was a lot at stake for the Green leadership, especially within the party: the primary election was intended to clarify who would run as the party’s top candidate in the 2017 federal election. Cem Özdemir, Anton Hofreiter and Robert Habeck stood for election. What Habeck said about Putin at the time is now making the rounds again – and shows how long and consistently the top green man has been dealing with Russia.
The moderator asked Robert Habeck: “You are meeting Vladimir Putin. What are you telling him?” Robert Habeck’s clear answer: “Hello Mr. Putin, you don’t know me yet. I’ve just become my party’s top candidate. Give us another 2 or 3 months and then we’ll govern this republic and then the following will change. Firstly: we will Do not build Nord Stream and gradually reduce the trade relations of gas transfer to Russia because we are an energy transition country.”

“Shopping in the malls in Munich is over”
Anyone who expects that he is only interested in green energy issues is far from it. Habeck goes on and makes it very clear: “Secondly, we will no longer let those who bomb Syria and still do business with them into the country. Shopping in Munich in the malls for the women from the butchers is over. And thirdly , we will allow those who, like us, believe in free, fair, young, friendly coexistence in Europe to enter the country with easier visas, so that it is not: Germany/Europe against Russia, but an authoritarian oligarchic leadership structure against a population who actually want peace and togetherness.”
Baerbock made a similar statement in an ARD program two years ago: “We are already 40 percent dependent on Russia. If we now create additional capacities and do not use other capacities, this dependence will increase and that is the geopolitical problem Wrong Way.”
