Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier did not travel to Kyiv, but the heads of state of Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania did. The visit to a destroyed suburb of Kyiv shakes her.
Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and the heads of state of the three Baltic countries Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia met in Ukraine for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyj. This was announced by the Polish Presidential Office on Twitter.
The heads of state of the four EU and NATO countries traveled by train to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Wednesday. In doing so, they wanted to give a sign of support for Ukraine in its defense against the Russian attack.
Before their meeting with Selenskyj, the four presidents visited Borodjanka, northwest of Kyiv, with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal – and were shocked in messages on Twitter. There “the dark side of humanity was shown”, wrote the Lithuanian head of state Gitanas Nauseda.
His Estonian colleague Alar Karis wrote: “Evil has left its mark of deadly destruction.”
Latvia’s President Egils Levits called for a reconstruction plan for Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian sources, Borodyanka is one of the most heavily damaged cities in the capital region. The government in Kyiv fears a high number of victims. The Ukrainian civil defense has been looking for survivors and victims there for the past week. Selenskyj recently said that in Borodyanka it was “much more terrible” than in Bucha.
The pictures from Bucha – another Kiev suburb – had caused international horror. There, after the withdrawal of Russian troops, hundreds of bodies of former residents were found on the streets. Ukraine blames Russian troops for the massacre. Moscow denies that.
According to information from Warsaw, the visit was organized by Poland on a joint initiative. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier actually wanted to travel to Kyiv with the four presidents. However, the Ukrainian government rejected Steinmeier’s visit.
