“Moskva”: Flagship of the Black Sea Fleet severely damaged after an explosion

According to the Ministry of Defence, the “Moskva”, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is badly damaged. Accordingly, ammunition exploded due to a fire on board. Apparently a missile hit the ship.

The Russian warship “Moskva” was “seriously damaged” in a munitions explosion, according to Russian state media reports. “As a result of a fire, ammunition detonated on the missile cruiser ‘Moskva’. The ship was badly damaged,” the Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday, according to the Tass and Ria Novosti news agencies. Ukraine had previously reported shelling the most important ship in the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, the agencies said in a statement from the Department of Defense. The crew of the ship had been brought to safety.

“Moskva” attacked by Ukrainian missile

The governor of the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa, Maxym Marchenko, had previously stated that the “Moskva” had been attacked with Ukrainian “Neptune”-type missiles. Ukrainian Presidential Advisor Oleksiy Arestovych said the “flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet” was on fire.

The “Moskva” was built in the Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv during Soviet times and, according to Russian media reports, went into operation in 1983. In 2015, the warship with its 510-strong crew was deployed in the eastern Mediterranean to protect the Russian Hmeimim airbase in Syria, according to TASS.

Involved in attack on Snake Island

The warship is reportedly carrying 16 P1000 Wulkan anti-ship missiles and a variety of other weapon systems, including anti-submarine weapons.

More and more criticism of Olaf Scholz' policy: majority for offensive weapons to Ukraine

At the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the “Moskva” attacked the Ukrainian Snake Island near the Romanian border and called on the soldiers stationed there to surrender – without success. 19 Ukrainian marines were taken prisoner by the Russians in the attack. According to the Ukrainian parliament, they were released at the end of March as part of a prisoner exchange with Russia.
