In view of a feared large-scale Russian attack in eastern Ukraine, escape routes are being prepared. Meanwhile, London is assuming further serious attacks on the civilian infrastructure in the region.
According to the government in Kyiv, nine escape corridors have been set up in the contested regions of Luhansk and Donetsk ahead of the feared large-scale Russian attack in eastern Ukraine.
There is an opportunity for private vehicles to escape from the particularly hard-fought port city of Mariupol in the Donetsk region in the direction of the city of Zaporizhia, said Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Wereshchuk on Thursday.
Eight more corridors have been set up in the Luhansk region – with the provisional destination of Bakhmut. But they could only work if the Russians stopped firing, said Wereshchuk. In addition, an evacuation train should travel from Pokrovsk via Kyiv to Chop in the south-west of Ukraine, according to the capital.
The Ukrainian and Russian sides repeatedly accuse each other of sabotaging the evacuation of towns and the escape of civilians through the corridors. The routes are announced every day. There had been none on Wednesday.
In the days before, escape corridors for the civilian population had been repeatedly set up in embattled cities in eastern Ukraine. According to Ukrainian information, many thousands of people have already been able to flee. Russia recently announced that it would concentrate combat operations on eastern Ukraine. The war started by Russia has been going on since February 24th.
London: Urban centers will be attacked again
Great Britain meanwhile expects further heavy attacks on the region’s civilian infrastructure in view of the likely Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine. “Urban centers have come under repeated ruthless Russian attacks throughout the conflict,” Britain’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday. “The cities of Kramatorsk and Kostyantynivka are likely to be Russian targets for similar acts of violence.”
Kramatorsk is a regional center for the evacuation of war refugees. More than 50 people were killed in a rocket attack on the city’s train station on Friday. Kostyantynivka is located south of Kramatorsk.
It was also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had made it clear that his interest was in Donbass in eastern Ukraine. In preparation for a new offensive, Russia is attacking Ukrainian forces there. The Ministry of Defense in London regularly makes intelligence information public.
“The combination of large-scale missile and artillery attacks and efforts to concentrate forces for an offensive represents a return to traditional Russian military doctrine.” However, this would require enormous reinforcements. “Ukraine’s continued defense of Mariupol is currently tying up a significant number of Russian troops and equipment.”
