Migration: Asylum seekers to Rwanda? Sharp criticism of Johnson’s plans

The British prime minister wants to curb illegal migration across the English Channel – and send male asylum seekers to Rwanda. The opposition describes the plans as “unworkable, unethical and blackmailing”.

Human rights activists and the opposition have reacted with outrage to the British government’s plan to fly refugees to Rwanda upon arrival and have them wait there for their asylum decision.

The organization Detention Action criticized that the men sent to East Africa “are likely to face indefinite detention under a government notorious for the violent persecution of dissidents”. Labor has called Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans “unworkable, unethical and blackmailing”.

With the agreement that Home Secretary Priti Patel was supposed to sign in Rwanda on Thursday, Johnson wants to significantly curb illegal migration across the English Channel. He had promised that after Brexit, Great Britain would again independently determine its borders and immigration. Recently, however, the number of people who entered the country illegally had increased significantly.

According to British media reports, only male asylum seekers should be sent to Rwanda. London is providing 120 million pounds (145 million euros) for a test project. Anyone in Great Britain who can wait for a decision should be accommodated in strictly controlled reception camps in the future.

Johnson: Navy to prevent illegal migration

Johnson announced on Thursday that the British Navy will in future prevent people from entering the country illegally via the English Channel. “We need to ensure that the only route to asylum in the UK is safe and legal,” Johnson said. Anyone who tries to “skip the queue or abuse our systems” should be taken “quickly and humanely” to a third country or to the country of origin. Critics warned of so-called pushbacks by the Navy, i.e. the rejection of hardly seaworthy boats on the open sea.

The prime minister threatened people smugglers with life imprisonment. In addition, capacities for deportation would be expanded.
