Will Ukraine win against Russia?
Initially, NATO and the West were concerned with helping Ukraine defend the country. “Now it looks like we are helping Ukraine to defeat Russia.” Whether this will succeed is another question. But the logic that Russia must lose this war is spreading more and more, says the politics professor at the Bundeswehr University in Munich. And further: “A defeat in Ukraine is a defeat in the West.” Masala refers to Russia’s policy on indications and indications that “that Ukraine is not the last piece of land they want to take”.

Masala sees the failed visit of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Kyiv as an attempt by Ukraine to influence German domestic politics. “Ukraine is probably trying to increase the pressure on Germany to finally take a positive stance on the issue of supplying heavy weapons”according to Masala.
The military expert welcomes Sweden and Finland’s plans to apply for NATO membership. “After a long time, we are once again accepting states that actually bring something to NATO – because they have ultra-modern armed forces”, he says. He does not see the immediate vicinity of Russia as a source of new tensions. Then: “Russia currently has neither the forces nor the strategic perspective to cause unrest on the Russian-Finnish border.”
