Around 3,000 soldiers of the Bundeswehr are deployed abroad. In view of the Ukraine war, Eva Högl is now calling for the operations to be reviewed – especially with regard to two countries.
In view of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the Bundestag Commissioner for the Armed Forces, Eva Högl (SPD), is calling for all Bundeswehr missions abroad to be reviewed.
“Against the background of the changed security policy situation, all Bundeswehr operations must be evaluated quickly,” she told the Funke media group (Online Friday, Print Saturday). According to the Bundeswehr, almost 3,300 soldiers are currently on twelve missions on three continents, a good third of them in Mali.
Högl was critical of the deployment in Iraq and Jordan, for example. The Bundeswehr has been involved in international operations there since 2015 in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist militia in order to contribute to stabilization. The troop can deploy a maximum of 500 soldiers there.
Högl demanded that the evaluation announced by the federal government begin quickly, namely “carefully, relentlessly, honestly and taking all aspects into account”. It must be discussed and decided what goals Germany is pursuing in Iraq and Jordan and what skills are required for this. Air refueling, radar and advice are important contributions from Germany. However, with the withdrawal of an A400M aircraft for air refueling, “a central element for the order” is now missing. According to her, the consultation in Erbil in northern Iraq has also been greatly reduced. “It is therefore important to bring the expense and income into the right balance here.” The Bundestag’s current mandate for the mission runs until October 31.
