Saber rattling from Pyongyang: It is not the first time this year that North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un is said to have overseen the test of a guided missile.
The self-declared nuclear power North Korea says it has successfully tested a new type of tactical guided missile.
The development of this weapon system increases the efficiency of the use of “tactical nuclear weapons”, the state media reported, without giving the time of the test or other details. Ruler Kim Jong Un supervised the test.
The general staff of the South Korean armed forces confirmed the test and initially spoke of two “projectiles” that North Korea fired towards the open sea in the east. They flew about 110 kilometers. Experts suspected that these could be short-range ballistic missiles.
UN resolutions ban North Korea from testing ballistic missiles of any range, which, depending on the design, can also carry a nuclear warhead. Ballistic missiles are usually surface-to-surface missiles, most of which have a guidance system. North Korea had already tested missiles several times this year.
At the end of March, neighboring countries were alarmed by the launch of a North Korean ICBM. ICBMs have ranges of more than 5500 kilometers. North Korea is subject to tough international sanctions because of its nuclear weapons program.
