The former President of Peru is actually serving a long prison sentence for serious human rights violations – but his poor health led to a pardon.
Peru’s imprisoned ex-president Alberto Fujimori is again in the hospital. The 83-year-old was able to be stabilized there after a fainting spell, said the South American country’s prison authority.
The ex-president had tachycardia, the hospital said. He was then transferred to a clinic in the capital Lima for monitoring. Fujimori has suffered from heart and respiratory problems on and off for the past few months.
The ex-president (1990-2000) is serving a 25-year prison sentence for serious human rights violations. During his tenure from 1990 to 2000, Fujimori allowed security forces to take rigorous action against left-wing and allegedly subversive forces, and parliament was disempowered. In addition, tens of thousands of indigenous women were forcibly sterilized in order to reduce their number of children.
The 83-year-old can hope for release after a court decision in March. Fujimori had already been pardoned in 2017 with reference to his medical condition, but the Supreme Court overturned this in 2018. The constitutional court has recently reinstated the pardon.
