Corona pandemic: Holetschek calls for a new push for compulsory vaccination

At the beginning of April, mandatory vaccination from the age of 60 clearly failed in the Bundestag. Chancellor Scholz has ruled out a start. Bavaria’s Health Minister Klaus Holteschek sees things differently.

Bavaria’s Health Minister Klaus Holteschek (CSU) calls for a new push by the federal government for general vaccination.

“We must all be clear: Vulnerable groups are best protected when as many people as possible are vaccinated,” he said, according to a statement from his ministry.

If this does not happen, according to Holetschek, “the facility-related compulsory vaccination must also be put to the test”. “Because anything else would be unfair to those who have been fighting the pandemic on the front lines for two years.” According to the minister, almost 92 percent of nursing staff in Bavaria have been vaccinated at least twice and only 6.5 percent are completely unvaccinated.

A compromise draft supported by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) by several MPs for compulsory vaccination from the age of 60 clearly failed in the Bundestag at the beginning of April. For months, the chancellor had been campaigning for mandatory vaccination as a precautionary measure for the fall. Due to differences of opinion in the coalition, however, no government draft was drawn up.
