War in Ukraine: Weapons debate: FDP politician criticizes Scholz again

Will Germany supply heavy weapons to Ukraine? Chancellor Scholz is still keeping a low profile and is once again receiving criticism from his coalition partner.

The Chair of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, has again criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and called on him to make commitments to deliver heavy weapons to Ukraine.

The chancellor still doesn’t really say what he wants, “and I very much regret that,” said the FDP politician on the “Welt” station. You can’t tell where the problem is. “I just think we just don’t have time to have this discussion.” It’s about Ukraine, but also about “us in Europe”.

Strack-Zimmermann said she was pleased that Scholz had expressed the wish for more money to the state, but one does not win with money, weapons are needed. “And in this respect I would like the Chancellor to say clearly again that there is money. On the other hand: Germany is ready to deliver heavy weapons,” she added.

On Monday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized delays in arms deliveries to his country in his daily video address in view of an impending Russian offensive in the east of his country. He did not name any countries. Strack-Zimmermann said that anyone who is not as active as Ukraine would like should feel addressed.
