After renewed sharp criticism from the Ukrainian ambassador Andriy Melnyk of the Social Democrats’ Russia policy, the SPD leadership met with the diplomat.
“Especially in times when our hearts are heavy and the debates sometimes heated, it is all the more valuable to maintain open and trusting conversations,” tweeted SPD leader Saskia Esken. In addition, she put a picture that shows her and co-party leader Lars Klingbeil on Melnyk’s side, and thanked her for the conversation.
In the past few weeks, the ambassador had repeatedly condemned the SPD’s earlier Russia course in sharp words and called for more German arms deliveries to Ukraine. There was a tough exchange of blows at the weekend when former Federal Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) criticized “targeted attacks” on Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in a guest article for “Spiegel” and accused Melnyk of “conspiracy theories”.
Melnyk’s assertion that during his active years as a politician, Steinmeier had “for decades created a spider’s web of contacts with Russia”, which has had an impact on the current government, insinuates that the former chancellery and foreign minister helped organize the representation of Russia’s interests in Germany. “This is untrue and malicious,” Gabriel wrote.
Melnyk responded to Gabriel’s post on Twitter with the words: “Above all, your and your SPD cronies’ years of Putin-friendly politics were malicious, which brought about the barbaric war of annihilation against the state, nation, culture, against women and children in the first place.”
