British Prime Minister Johnson’s appearance in the affair about illegal lockdown parties is eagerly awaited today. The opposition accuses Johnson of lying to Parliament. They are demanding his resignation.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to face MPs in the affair about illegal lockdown parties today.
It is the Conservative Prime Minister’s first appearance in Parliament in London since he was fined last week for attending one of the parties. According to media reports, more could follow.
While Johnson is expected to apologize for breaking the law, he will continue to claim that he was unaware of the offense at the time. In addition, he is likely to try to downplay the issue in view of the Ukraine crisis and new plans for asylum policy.
Opposition politicians accuse Johnson of lying to Parliament. They are demanding his resignation. The Tory politician had repeatedly claimed not to have noticed any breaches of the rules and expressly ruled them out. It later emerged that he himself attended several of the meetings in question. His wife, Carrie Johnson, and Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak also received penal orders.
Johnson accepts the penalty order, said the Minister for Northern Ireland, Brandon Lewis, the broadcaster Sky News. “But that doesn’t mean that anything he said to Parliament was wrong at the time,” Lewis continued. He compared the penalty order to a fine for speeding.
Legal expert Emily Thornberry of the opposition Labor party called Johnson a liar and called on his party colleagues to clear the way for a vote on the Prime Minister’s future. A no-confidence vote against Johnson in his own party is currently considered unlikely. According to media reports, however, the deputies could commission a parliamentary committee to examine whether Johnson lied to parliament.
