Left-wing politicians: France: Mélenchon wants to become prime minister in parliamentary elections

In the upcoming parliamentary elections in France, leftist Jean-Luc Mélenchon is counting on his party’s majority to be elected prime minister. He had previously dropped out of the race for the presidency.

After losing the French presidential election, left-wing politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon wants to become prime minister by winning the general election.

“I ask the French to elect me prime minister,” Mélenchon told BFMTV on Tuesday night. He is counting on a majority for his left-wing party in the upcoming parliamentary elections in June.

In the first round of the presidential election, Mélenchon was behind incumbent Emmanuel Macron and the right-wing Marine Le Pen. Macron and Le Pen will face a runoff election on Sunday.

President chooses Prime Minister

In France, the President appoints the Prime Minister. If the presidential camp does not have a majority in parliament, he is forced to appoint a prime minister from another camp. Otherwise, Parliament could overthrow the government with a vote of no confidence. The prime minister then becomes significantly more important and making political decisions more difficult. Such a division of executive power is referred to as “cohabitation”.

Such a constellation last existed from 1997 to 2002 with the conservative head of state Jacques Chirac and the socialist prime minister Lionel Jospin. Since then, voters have not left the newly elected president without a parliamentary majority in the vote that took place a few weeks later.

Mélenchon, who in the fragmented left camp got by far the best result in the first round of the presidential election on April 10, is hoping for alliances with other left-wing parties for the parliamentary elections.
