Diplomacy: SPD leader wants clear EU accession prospects for Ukraine

Ukraine wants to join the European Union and is taking the appropriate steps. SPD leader Lars Klingbeil sees the Ukrainians as part of the EU – this must continue to be clearly signaled.

SPD leader Lars Klingbeil has spoken out in favor of clear EU accession prospects for Ukraine.

«People in Ukraine are Europeans. They are fighting for our European values and with great determination against Putin’s brutal troops,” he told the German Press Agency before a meeting between co-party leader Saskia Esken and Ukrainian ambassador Andriy Melnyk.

Of course, Ukraine must also fully comply with the rules for EU membership and it will take time before the application can be evaluated and the accession negotiations can start, said Klingbeil. “But the common signal in these difficult times, we see you as part of the EU, is correct.”

Shortly after the Russian war of aggression began, Ukraine officially applied for EU membership and is pushing for an accelerated process. On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy forwarded the questionnaire for his country’s EU accession to the European Union. He received it just this month during a visit by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Kyiv. The paper is considered the basis for accession talks.

Melnyk and Esken plan to meet for the second time in two weeks on Wednesday. Klingbeil was also present at an earlier meeting on April 6th.

Melnyk urges the federal government to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine. Many in the SPD are skeptical. In the past few weeks, Melnyk had repeatedly condemned the SPD’s previous Russia course in sharp words.
