The number of people fleeing the war in Ukraine to Germany is increasing. However, their exact number is unknown.
Eight weeks after the start of the Russian attack, more than 2,000 war refugees from Ukraine are still reaching Germany every day.
As the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced on Twitter, the Federal Police have registered the arrival of 366,304 refugees from Ukraine in Germany since the beginning of the war on February 24. The refugees are mainly women, children and old people.
However, the exact number of people from Ukraine who have sought refuge in this country is currently not known, because there are usually no stationary controls at the internal EU borders and Ukrainians can enter the country for 90 days without a visa. There is also no reliable data on a possible onward journey to another EU country or the return of people who have fled to Germany to Ukraine.
Almost 2.9 million entries into Poland
In Poland, almost 2.9 million people have now fled to safety. This was announced by the Polish border guard on Twitter. Around 22,300 refugees arrived on Wednesday – a decrease of 11 percent compared to the day before.
The same number of people (22,300) crossed the border towards Ukraine on the same day. A total of 779,000 people have entered Ukraine from Poland since the beginning of the war on February 24. According to the authorities, the majority of these were Ukrainian citizens. They mostly travel to areas that the Ukrainian army has recaptured. There is no official information on how many of the war refugees stayed in Poland and how many traveled on to other EU countries.
Before the Russian invasion on February 24, Ukraine had a population of more than 44 million. Poland and Ukraine are connected by a border more than 500 kilometers long.
