The Hessian left sees the sexism allegations as a “wake-up call”. The party promises education and prevention. The Federal Chairperson, who comes from the Hessian ranks, is particularly in focus.
In view of the allegations of sexism, the Hessian left sees no fault in the federal chair and former Hessian state parliamentary group chair Janine Wissler. That said the deputy state chairman Michael Erhardt in Frankfurt.
Co-head of state Petra Heimer added that no concrete figures on victims or suspects could be given so far. Of the previous three suspects, an employee of the parliamentary group was given leave, as was the personal employee of a member of parliament, Heimer reported. According to Erhardt, the deputy state chairwoman Marjana Schott resigned from her position on Wednesday.
According to the state board, a “culture of looking” is now to be developed. The incidents had shaken the party badly, said co-head of state Jan Schalauske. It is a serious grievance that there are no structures to which those affected can turn. It is now also being discussed whether anti-sexist training courses should be made compulsory for officials.
The allegations became known to the board at the end of November 2021, it said. As a result, contact was made with a counseling center and those affected were offered talks, which, however, were largely not accepted. In March, a code of conduct was adopted, which should be further developed in order to prevent future incidents from happening again. The topic of toxic masculinity and role behavior should be the focus of further training. The first steps were discussed on Wednesday evening in the board, it said.
Last Friday, a report by the news magazine Der Spiegel revealed alleged cases of sexualized violence in the Hessian Left Party. There are various documents with references to “alleged border crossings, abuse of power and a toxic macho culture,” wrote the news magazine after interviews with ten women and men. Wissler then firmly opposed the fact that “I am accused of having protected anyone”.
On Wednesday, the co-leader of the left, Susanne Hennig-Wellsow, announced her resignation with immediate effect. She justified this primarily with private reasons, as further reasons she cited a necessary renewal of the party. She also mentioned how sexism is dealt with in her own ranks. This revealed blatant deficits of the party. Wissler now wants to continue the party alone for the time being.
