Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy gives a speech in front of the Portuguese Parliament. In this he sees some parallels between Portugal’s past and Ukraine – and draws a comparison with the Second World War.
In a video address to the Portuguese parliament, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy compared the destruction in his country by Russian troops with that of World War II.
“The damage that is being inflicted on Ukraine now is similar to what happened in World War II,” he said, according to the translation of the speech, which was held in Ukrainian. It was simultaneously translated into Portuguese on TV channel RTP.
“We’re not just fighting for our independence, we’re fighting for our survival,” he affirmed in the 15-minute speech. Zelenskyy thanked the Portuguese for the help they have provided so far, but at the same time called for further support, especially heavy weapons and sanctions against Russia. MPs from the Communist Party and the right-wing populist Chega stayed away from the meeting.
Selenskyj sees parallels with the Carnation Revolution
Zelenskyi drew a parallel between Portugal’s return to democracy from 1974 and Ukraine. “The Carnation Revolution that freed them from dictatorship makes them understand how we feel,” he said.
“The occupiers killed just for fun, they tortured, raped, killed these people and shot them in cars with children in them,” said Zelenskyy. In the 57 days since the attack began, more than 1,000 Ukrainian locations have been occupied and destroyed by Russian troops. “Millions of people have to flee, it’s as if all of Portugal had to leave the country,” said Zelenskyj. Portugal has 10.3 million inhabitants.
The President of the Portuguese Parliament, Augusto Santos Silva, said his country would support Ukraine even more than before. This also applies to Ukraine’s application for EU membership.
