The British Star architect Norman Foster has offered his support in rebuilding the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, which was partially destroyed by Russian attacks. The 86-year-old spoke to Mayor Ihor Terekhov via video link earlier this week, the architect’s foundation and the city administration said.
With around 1.5 million inhabitants, Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine and is only around 40 kilometers from the Russian border. The city has been fiercely fought over since the Russian invasion began on February 24, and around a quarter of the buildings have been destroyed. So far, Russian troops have not managed to take Kharkiv.
Foster promised to gather “the best minds with the best planning, architecture, design and engineering skills in the world” to help Kharkiv “rebirth”. In an excerpt from the architect’s video call with Kharkiv’s mayor, which the city government published on Facebook, Terekhov said, Kharkiv needs new hospitals, schools and kindergartens as well as offices for the IT sector. All of these buildings should be about air raid shelters available, said the mayor. For residential buildings, he suggested underground car parks where the residents could in safety in emergencies could bring.
