Climate change: What the traffic light can do about it – in the podcast “important today”

Today is Earth Day. To do this, we look at the most important questions relating to climate change: can we still achieve the 1.5 degree target or is it already too late? What is German politics doing to mitigate climate change? And how does the Ukraine war play into this?

On Earth Day, people in more than 175 countries are thinking about the environment, the climate, our consumer behavior – the introduction of a speed limit would have been a nice idea, says the journalist and “RTL aktuell” presenter Maik Meuser. “Since I’ve been driving an electric car, I’ve rarely driven faster than 130 km/h. And I realize that you don’t need that at all,” said Meuser in the 259th edition of the podcast “important today”. The government could do more, he says and demands: “We have to generate more energy from wind, sun and other renewable sources than we use.”

However, Meuser not only talks about the climate and the environment, he also does his best for it himself. Together with his family, he reduced his plastic consumption to a minimum and lives ecologically and sustainably. He explains where we all still have some catching up to do and what the traffic light coalition could and must do now.

Presidential election in France

Chancellor Olaf Scholz did it, as did the heads of government of Spain and Portugal, Pedro Sánchez and António Costa, as well as several French trade unions and employers’ associations, companies, organizations, influential private individuals – they are all calling for this Sunday in the runoff election for the French to elect Emmanuel Macron to the presidency.

Not necessarily because they particularly like the liberal candidate and incumbent French president. No, it is also, or above all, the fear of what will happen if France chooses the other candidate: the right-wing extremist Marine Le Pen. Because then there would probably be “Frexit,” explains “stern” reporter and France expert Andrea Ritter, France’s exit from the European Union.
