War against Ukraine: Satellite images are said to show mass graves near Mariupol

Aerial photos from the Manhusch suburb are said to document a mass grave along a road. Local authorities speak of graves for up to 9,000 bodies – this information cannot be checked.

According to the media, satellite images are said to indicate a possible mass grave near the port city of Mariupol in south-eastern Ukraine, which was besieged by Russian troops.

The US satellite photo service Maxar distributed images that are said to show several excavated grave sites in the suburb of Manhush. Local authorities say that thousands of civilians are buried in Manhush. The Ukrainian information was not independently verifiable.

The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj had spoken of tens of thousands of dead in the port city, which had been fought over for weeks. Selenskyj has not yet publicly commented on the alleged mass grave that has now been discovered. The information goes back to the Mariupol City Council and Mayor Wadym Bojchenko, who speak of graves for up to 9,000 bodies, but are no longer on site themselves.

The Maxar satellite photo of Manhush – about 20 kilometers west of Mariupol – is said to show a mass grave parallel to the course of the road near a cemetery. According to a report by the US newspaper “The New York Times”, which claims to have analyzed the recordings, there are around 300 excavated graves there. They are said to have been created within two weeks between March and April, as a comparison of the recording dates showed.

London warns of high losses in steel mill storm

Meanwhile, British intelligence experts are warning that Russian troops could expect high losses if the surrounded Azovstal steel works in Mariupol were stormed. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to establish a blockade around the steel plant indicates a desire to contain Ukrainian resistance in Mariupol and free up Russian forces for deployment to other parts of eastern Ukraine, the report said Department of Defense daily intelligence update.

Mariupol was encircled shortly after the Russian war of aggression began two months earlier. Only in the Azovstal plant are several hundred Ukrainian soldiers still holding out. According to Ukrainian sources, there are also around 1,000 civilians with them.
