Nord Stream 2: Survey: Every second person nationwide for Schwesig’s resignation

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s head of government is still under pressure for her pro-Russia course. The climate foundation MV, with whose help the completion of Nord Stream 2 was supported, is once again in focus.

In view of the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s political involvement in Russia, according to a survey, a relative majority of Germans would think Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig’s resignation would be the right thing to do.

As the “Bild” newspaper reports, citing the representative survey by the Insa Institute, 48 percent of the 1001 respondents answered in the affirmative the question “Should Manuela Schwesig resign as Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania due to her involvement with Russia?” 27 percent spoke out against it. 25 percent stated that they did not know or did not want to provide any information. The voters of the SPD are therefore divided (43 to 41 percent).

Schwesig has been under criticism for weeks because of her pro-Russian actions. The focus is on their support for the construction of the Russian-German Baltic Sea gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 and the establishment of the climate foundation MV, with the help of which US sanctions were circumvented and the completion of the pipeline was supported. According to documents, Nord Stream 2 AG was directly involved in founding the foundation.

Sellering wants to provide information about the future of the foundation

The chairman of the foundation, Erwin Sellering (SPD), wants to talk about the future of the foundation at a press conference in Schwerin today. As stated in the invitation, it should be explained “what has been achieved in the area of the foundation that is oriented towards the common good and how the work will continue”. In addition, there was also an economic part of the foundation, which had supported the completion of the German-Russian Baltic Sea gas pipeline.

After the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the German government stopped the commissioning of the line, which had meanwhile been completed. According to a decision by the state parliament, the foundation is to be dissolved, but there is an unresolved dispute about this. Sellering considers a dissolution to be impossible for legal reasons.

The foundation law expert Katharina Uffmann will also take part in the press event in Schwerin; it is therefore to be expected that Sellering will also comment on the political dispute surrounding the dissolution.

Greens call for dissolution of the foundation

The Greens spoke out in favor of an immediate dissolution of the climate foundation. “Nord Stream is dead. Now you can dissolve the state foundation immediately,” said Greens Federal Chairman Omid Nouripour on Deutschlandfunk. Nouripour hopes that this will happen “as soon as possible”.

“It’s true that there are still a few questions that need to be answered, especially in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania,” Nouripour said. Including the question of whether the controversial climate foundation has to pay gift tax on the 20 million euros paid by Nord Stream 2 AG. A recent report by the magazine “Cicero” not only brings up a possible tax liability of 10 million euros, documents are also said to have been lost and transactions without tax numbers have been created. “You rub your eyes and wonder what that’s supposed to be,” said Nouripour. The Greens hope that Schwesig will actually answer these questions “very, very soon”.
